AC Milan have maintained bottom spot in Group B of this season’s Champions League after they lost 2-1 at home to Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in their second game in the group.

Liverpool were the first opponents for AC Milan in Group B and the Italians pushed the Reds all the way before they eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. Reds skipper Jordan Henderson scored the all-important third goal in the second half to hand the three points on offer to his team. The result meant that AC Milan were the only team to suffer defeat after the first round of games in Group B and the Rossoneritook the bottom spot as a result.

AC Milan are still the fourth and last team in their group after the narrow home defeat to Atletico Madrid with ten men. Franck Kessie was the guilty party after he was sent off around the half hour mark for two yellow cards. Atletico Madrid went behind on 20 minutes through a well taken strike fromRafael Leao.

Despite playing the most part of the game with ten men, AC Milan gave a good account of themselves especially on the defensive front but it was not enough as they suffered a stoppage time penalty call which was dispatched by Luis Suarez to give Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win. The Spanish champions had to wait till the 84th minute for the equaliser and that paved the way for the second Atletico Madrid goal.

Milan have a very poor record against Spanish opposition and that continued against Atletico Madrid when the two clubs met on Tuesday. The Rossoneri have won just one of their last 18 games against a Spanish team on the European stage and that was in the Champions League clash with Barcelona in February 2013. The Catalans were beaten 2-0 during that game.
